Caltrans: Impact of Active Transportation on Emissions

Caltrans PI - Active Transportation
Client: California Department of Transportation - Division of Research, Innovation, and System Information (DRISI)
Audience: Caltrans managers and staff, partners, stakeholders, other state DOTs

CTC prepared this report for Caltrans to help the department gather information about the effects of active transportation (primarily walking and bicycling) on the reduction of vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions. Through a literature review and interviews with agency staff, we examined research, tools, models and metrics related to quantifying these effects, and policies, strategies and characteristics of the built environment that encourage the use of active transportation.
